How To Use Beard Balm Perfectly Every Time

You're here because you want to learn how to use beard balm and get the best results on each application.  So, throughout this tutorial, we're going to break down exactly how to apply beard balm perfectly every time you use it.

First, it's important to understand that beard balm is designed to help the beard look good and smell good.  Beard balm hydrates the beard by coating the hairs and provides a slight amount of hold to the beard.  This is almost like a pomade with less hold, but for the beard instead of the scalp.

Let's get started.

Step 1: Start with a dry, clean beard. While we recommend applying beard balm when you're fresh out of the shower so that the beard is clean, that's not the most important thing.  The most important part of this process has a mostly dry beard.  The beard can be slightly damp but should not feel wet.  If you are fresh out of the shower, simply towel dry the beard thoroughly, as fully drying the beard with a hairdryer.

Step 2: Once your beard is dry, pierce the beard balm with your index finger, fingernail to get a nice clump that fills up the tip of your finger.  This should cover about a 1/4 or 1/2 inch in size.  This process sometimes takes practice since all beards are different shapes and sizes, but the amount listed above should work for the most part. Make sure to put the lid back on your beard balm as well to prevent the product itself from drying out.

Step 3: Work the balm between your palm and fingers until it melts.  It's important to understand that a good beard balm like ours actually contains beeswax.  The beeswax helps harden the beard balm, but more importantly, it adds hold to help shape and style the beard.  Often, if things go wrong when a man is learning how to apply beard balm for the first time, it's simply because he skipped the melting step.  You'll want to beard balm to feel sticky on the hands and almost liquified.  This process usually only takes about 10 seconds in total, but it'll make all the difference in a smooth application process.  Failure to fully melt the beard balm down will result in getting small clumps caught in your beard.

Step 4: Work the balm into your beard.  Much like we do with beard oil and beard butter, you'll want to start at the sides of the beard and work in.  Next, you'll want to work into the underside of the beard all the way down to the skin.  You should feel your fingers touch your skin and proceeded to continue working through the beard.

Step 5: Work the balm into the mustache and rub the sides of the beard down to feel like you are straightening the beard hairs downward.  Then comb the beard to continue straightening the beard downward.  About 30 seconds of combing the beard should work.

Notice in the picture above how healthy his beard looks?  It has a slight shine, but it doesn't look greasy.  This is the look that you are going for.

At this point, the beard should feel good, look good, smell good, and have a slight sheen to it; think of it as a healthy look that is not dull.  If the beard looks messy or extremely wet, then you've applied too much beard balm into the beard.  Your beard should also not look greasy at all.

How Often Should You Apply Beard Balm?

We recommend applying beard balm in the morning and at night.  This typically is at the start of the day, after a shower, and in the evening before bed.  However, that doesn't mean you can't reapply in the afternoon or evening as well.  Some guys like to apply throughout the day as a "touch-up" to add additional style or scent to the beard.

That's all there is to it!  With a couple of applications, you'll be a pro at applying beard balm.  After reading this is you're still wondering how do you use beard balm, make sure to reach out and ask any questions you need to be answered!
