How To Use Beard Butter Step-By-Step

5 minute read

Today we're going to discuss how to use beard butter for the best results! Honestly, this is an easy, non-delicate process, so if this is your very first time applying beard butter or you're thinking about buying beard butter - don't sweat the process! When you're done reading through this step-by-step tutorial, you'll know what to do with your first tub of beard butter.

First, what time of day should you use beard butter? Honestly, you can use beard butter whenever you'd like but let's start at the beginning of that day when you're fresh out of the shower. So step 0 is to take a shower, and then after your shower, do the following to apply your beard butter.

Step 1: Towel dry your beard as much as you can. It's ok for your beard to have some slight dampness, but make sure your beard is no longer dripping wet. If your beard is too wet, the product will not apply to the hair and skin correctly, negating some of the hold beard butter offers.

Step 2:  Now, take your index finger and scoop out enough that it coats the tip of your finger by about one fourth of an inch or so. See the picture of Greg Boswell demonstrating this below.

Notice how the beard butter coats the tip of his finger? Use his beard as a guide as well; if your beard is longer than his beard there, use a bit more. If your beard is shorter, use a bit less amount of product.

Step 3: Now rub the product between the palms of your hands. It's ok to coat your fingers as well. You'll want the product to cover the entire inside of your hands and palms.

Step 4: Next, place your hands on both sides of your beard. Your right hand should be on the right side of your beard and your left hand on the left side of your beard. Then slowly wipe down your face to the end of your beard. Then run your fingers inside your beard from the underside and work the fingers down to the skin. Bring the hands back to the top of the beard and smooth down, working your hands into the beard again. With a few more strokes, smooth the beard down. Watch the video below from about 4:25 to 6:00, and you'll see precisely how Greg works beard butter into his beard.

Step 5: Comb your beard gently downward. The beard combing process will help straighten your beard hairs out and remove any tangles, giving your beard a very pleasing aesthetic. Though we recommend using one of our awesome sandalwood combs, you can use any comb or brush that you'd like. We like sandalwood because beard butter and oils soak into the comb and the comb becomes conditioned. Once your comb becomes conditioned, it becomes smooth and makes it easy to comb through your beard anytime. Plus, it'll smell great!

Though the above regiment is what we advise to get the most out of your beard butter, it doesn't only have to occur in the morning. You could reapply throughout the day if you'd like. Some guys like an additional application because they can reshape their beards throughout the day and apply more scents this way! If you have an exceptionally dry beard, extra applications are a great idea! Just remember, no matter what, when you apply beard butter, make sure you're always starting the application process with a dry beard. Don't be afraid to use some beard oil to your beard just before bed too. Some guys like the way it smells at bedtime, and it's always a bonus to wake up in the morning with your beard feeling great already.

Consider Testing Amounts

After you apply beard butter, the final look of your beard should always be matte or semi-glossy but non-greasy. If your beard looks greasy, you're using too much beard butter. If your skin feels dry or your beard looks dry, you may not be applying enough. So, depending on your first attempt results, you may need to test and try different amounts of beard butter. But, hey, this is part of the process when you're learning how to use beard butter! Within a few applications, you'll be a pro at doing this, and you'll be applying your butter like a pro.

Finally, you'll most likely want to try different scents to find what scents you like the most. Though the scent won't interfere with how you're applying beard butter, the scent does matter! Take a gander at our different scents to find which ones you may be interested in the most.
