Should I Shampoo My Beard Daily Or Even At All?

4 minute read

As you go through your beard journey, you'll come to a point where you wonder, should I shampoo my beard? We all go through this at one point or another. The short answer is yes, you should shampoo your beard. However, you must be shampooing your beard the right way and with the right products.

First, avoid using scalp shampoo for your beard. Most scalp shampoos will cause the beard to dry out. Whereas beard shampoos, like ours, are designed to add additional oils into the beard to help keep it hydrated.

Let's dive into some more beard shampooing questions.

Why Should I Shampoo My Beard?

Well, the simple answer is to get the beard clean. However, it's a bit of a deeper subject than that! Shampooing your beard helps prevent the hairs from tangling as often. Tangled hairs can sometimes lead to ingrown hairs, which can cause infection and discomfort. By shampooing your beard, you're helping to avoid this. Keeping the beard clean also helps prevent pimples underneath the beard. If you've never had a pimple underneath your beard, trust me, you don't want one.

Another benefit of washing your beard is to remove debris and keep your beard smelling fresh. Hey, we've all gotten food in our beards at one point or another, but a good beard shampoo will help keep you fresh and clean. Using a naturally scented beard shampoo like ours will add the scent of your choice to your beard, which will help you smell awesome to the world.

Finally, beard shampoo helps combat dandruff. Our beard shampoo, for instance, gently washes away dandruff debris from the surface of the skin. This will help give you a better, more healthy-looking beard.

Should You Shampoo Your Beard Often?

No. You really only need to shampoo your beard every other day at the most. We recommend shampooing your beard 2-3 times per week. If you work at a job where you're getting dirty daily, you might opt to shampoo more but keep in mind the more often you shampoo, the more you risk drying your beard out. If you're using beard oil, balm, or beard butter daily, it will help prevent this; however, our best practices are for 2-3 times per week if you can do it.  By the way, if you're new to all this and need to know the difference between balm and butter read this.

Can You Co-Wash In Between Shampooing?

Co-washing refers to washing your beard with a beard conditioner on any day that you're not washing your beard with a beard shampoo. I.e., Many of the men that use our products will wash their beard with our beard shampoo, and then every other day, when they are not washing their beard, they simply apply our beard conditioner. This practice will help the beard stay more hydrated and less tangled. Here's an example of a week using the co-washing method:

Sunday: Shampoo, Monday: Condition, Tuesday: Condition, Wednesday: Shampoo, Thursday: Condition, Friday: Shampoo, Saturday: Condition

Final Thoughts

So in our opinion, it's a good practice to wash your beard 2-3 times per week. There's absolutely nothing wrong with co-washing your beard if you want the extra hydration. Finally, it's good to test your own beard. Some guys can wash their beard daily and never experience dryness, while other men can only wash their beards a couple of times per week. It's always good to test your own beard to see what works best for you.  You may find that your beard does well with a daily wash or may find that your beard feels best with co-washing.
