What Is Beard Balm Used For and Does It Work?

6 minute read

Beard balm is essentially both a styling product as well a protection product for your beard. Think of it as a way to keep up on your beard hygiene while staying well-groomed.  If you've asked what is beard balm, let me give you a brief bullet list to summarize, and then I'll walk you through everything you need to know about it.

Beard Balm Does The Following:

  • Hydrates the beard and helps prevent dandruff/flakes
  • Protects against the environment
  • Adds scents, so your beard smells great
  • Adds style to your beard
  • Helps prevent split ends
  • Adds some shine to your beard to improve the look
  • Softens the beard to prevent itchiness

Why Does Beard Balm Work Well?

It works so well for several reasons.  The first reason is that it essentially conditions the beard.  When the beard is conditioned, it softens the beard to prevent itch and seals in the moisture, which further goes on to help prevent dandruff of the beard as an added benefit.

What Are The Ingredients Of Beard Balm?

We can't speak for every beard balm under the sun, but our beard balm has some specific ingredients that make it work. Each ingredient has a vital role to play in how beard balm works. When you're learning what is beard balm used for, it's important to understand what each ingredient does for your beard.  Without further ado, here are the ingredients in our beard balm.

Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Beeswax, Cocoa Butter, JoJoba Oil, Avocado Oil, Grape Seed Oil. All-Natural Essential Oils For Scenting.

Now I'll break down each ingredient from the list above and what their purpose is.

Beeswax is one of the primary ingredients in beard balm.  Beeswax's sole responsibility is to add style ability to the beard.  Without the beeswax, you'd instead have a softer product like a beard butter like this (learn the difference here), and with a lot of beeswax, you'd have more of a beard wax product like this.

Coconut oil, cocoa butter, jojoba oil, avocado oil, and grape seed oils are carrier oils.  Carrier oils help make the beard balm work well.  In effect, these oils help coat the beard hairs and lock in moisture. These oils also help protect the beard as well as prevent split ends and dandruff.  You could say that carrier oils are the most important part of a beard balm.

Shea Butter is a natural, pliable agent that helps turn these awesome oils into a softer paste while making it easier and convenient to apply.  Beard balm would be much harder without shea butter, like beard wax, and more difficult to apply to the beard and skin.  Shea butter is also used because it feels great on the skin and beard.  Finally, shea butter also gives the beard an overall healthy look appearance and a light shine.

The all-natural essential oils we use in our beard balms have an important role as well.  These oils give our balms their scent.  We use various combinations of essential oils to give each balm their unique scents that are important here at Artius Man.  We carefully formulate each of our new scents while vigorously testing for perfection.

When To Use Beard Balm?

Well, to be honest, anytime you'd like!  We recommend starting your day with a warm shower and then towel dry your beard before applying your first beard balm (see more about using beard balm for the first time here).  Using beard balm first thing in the morning will help lock the moisture in your beard all day, and this will help ensure optimal beard health all day long.  You may opt to make a touch-up application at any time throughout the day.  Finally, we recommend applying a small amount before bed as well.  You'll love the way your beard smells all night long, and it will help keep your beard conditioned all night as you sleep.

We've covered when to use balm from a time standpoint, but what about growth?  Well, as with time, with growth, you can start using beard balm anytime as well.  However, if your beard is just stubble, you may want to hold off until your beard is at least 1/2 an inch or longer.  It's, of course, a preference more than anything but outside of conditioning the skin.  If you decide to use beard balm on stubble, make sure you use a minimal amount and still want to massage evenly through the beard hairs.

Does Beard Balm Help Growth Of The Beard?

Yes and no.  Here's the truth despite what you may have heard.  Beard balm helps to optimize the overall health of your beard, which in turn helps aid beard growth.  But, it's not a miracle ointment that magically helps grow beard hair.  Part of overall beard growth is governed by how healthy you are, how well you eat, and how well you take care of your hair.

Where Can You Buy Beard Balm?

Online with us, of course!  We currently have 20 beard balm scents to choose from, and we are adding new balm scents all the time.  During the holidays, we typically have some seasonal scents to choose from as well.

How To Pick The Right Beard Balm

It all comes down to scents.  What are your favorite types of scents?  Once you determine what your favorite types of scents are, start looking there.  I.e., if you like peppermint, check out our Winter's Chill blend.  However, you might like citrus, and in that case, we have several citrus scents ranging from our fan-favorite, Citrus Fire, Citrus Spice, e4, a citrus cedar, and our Orange Grove, which is a woodsy orange scent.  Optionally some folks just grab a 20 piece beard oil sampler pack and try all of our scents at once (see it here).  We know that beard oil and balm are not the same things, but this allows you to simply test out the scents easier and affordably.

Conclusion

To sum everything up, beard balm is designed to maintain the optimal health of a man's beard.  It also makes it look and smell great.  So when you are considering your beard regiment, you may want to give beard balm a try.
